Discover more about Nishi Chaya District

Step back in time as you wander through the Nishi Chaya District, a compact and atmospheric neighborhood that whispers tales of Kanazawa's geisha heritage. Founded in 1820 alongside Higashi Chaya, this district served as an exclusive enclave for geiko to entertain affluent guests with music, dance, and games. Nishi Chaya is smaller and quieter compared to its counterpart, Higashi Chaya, offering a more intimate and less crowded experience. The district's main street showcases well-preserved, two-story wooden chaya buildings, characterized by their distinctive protruding wooden latticework windows. While some buildings still function as exclusive geiko parlors, many have been transformed into charming sweet shops and cafes. Don't miss the Nishi Chaya Museum, housed in a former teahouse, where you can explore the meticulously appointed rooms where geiko once welcomed their clients. The museum also features exhibits related to Seijiro Shimada, a renowned author who spent his childhood in the district. As evening descends, listen for the enchanting sound of the shamisen, a traditional three-stringed instrument, drifting from the teahouses, further enhancing the district's captivating ambiance.
