Walking

From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, walk north for about 15 minutes. Head through the main street and turn left after passing the railway crossing. Continue straight, following the signs for Jojakkoji Temple. The path will lead you through a residential area and then gradually uphill towards the temple entrance.

Public Transport

Take Kyoto City Bus #11, #91, or #93 from Kyoto Station to JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. From there, follow the walking directions. The bus fare is ¥230 for adults. Alternatively, take the Randen tram line to Arashiyama Station and walk for about 20 minutes. The Randen fare is ¥250.

Taxi

From Kyoto Station, a taxi to Jojakkoji Temple takes approximately 25-30 minutes and costs around ¥3,000 - ¥4,000, depending on traffic. Taxis are readily available at Kyoto Station. In the autumn, expect higher fares and potential delays due to increased traffic.

Jojakkoji Temple, whose name derives from the Buddhist term 'jojakko-do' meaning 'an ideal world in Buddhism', offers a tranquil and scenic experience in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto. Founded in 1596 by Nisshin, a high priest of the Nichiren sect, the temple is celebrated for its natural beauty, especially during autumn when its over 200 maple trees display vibrant colors.The temple grounds feature several notable structures. The Niomon Gate, a thatched-roof gate, is the oldest building in the temple and is believed to showcase the work of the master sculptor Unkei. The Main Hall, originally a guest hall from Fushimi Momoyama Castle, houses an image of Myoken, a Bodhisattva revered in Nichiren Buddhism. A two-story pagoda, dating back to 1620, stands as an Important Cultural Property and offers panoramic views of Arashiyama.Visitors can explore the moss-covered grounds, ascend the stone steps, and discover various vantage points offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The temple's design integrates seamlessly with the natural environment, creating a sense of harmony and peace. While beautiful year-round, Jojakkoji is especially enchanting in the fall, with the vibrant autumn leaves creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
