The Pilgrimage Bridge
Japan is primarily mountains, and the mountain culture preceded, and dictated, the various local cultures that make up the Japan we know today. The pilgrimage culture is a bride between the two. The Chichibu pilgrimage was fantastic. The city is already up in the mountains and you can see a lot of the remnants of the Japan where Buddhism and Shinto weren't separate religions, but a single cultural framework. My guide was a Chichibu local and did a fantastic job of explaining the local culture and how the pilgrimages were a part of it. We also lucked out and got to see the hidden statues that are only on display every 12 years. So I was very grateful to get to see them. I highly recommend this for anyone interest in learning the deeper nuances of Japanese culture.
