    Discover more about Gango-ji

Gangō-ji Temple, nestled in the Naramachi district of Nara, offers a captivating glimpse into Japan's ancient Buddhist heritage. Founded in 588 AD as Hōkō-ji Temple (also known as Asuka-dera) by the powerful Soga clan, it holds the distinction of being one of Japan's first Buddhist temples. The temple was moved to its current location in 718, when the capital was transferred to Heijo-kyo (present-day Nara), and renamed Gangō-ji. Once a sprawling complex encompassing much of Naramachi, Gangō-ji gradually declined over the centuries due to fires and reduced state support. Today, the temple retains its serene atmosphere and several significant structures, including the Gokuraku-do Hall (Mandala Hall) and Zen Room, both National Treasures that were once monks' quarters. These buildings showcase architectural styles from the Kamakura period (1185-1333). Remarkably, some of the roof tiles date back to the 6th century, making them the oldest in Japan. Visitors can explore the temple's main hall, admire the Chiko Mandala, and discover hidden ogre statues scattered throughout the grounds. The Hōrinkan houses a miniature five-story pagoda from the Nara period, along with other important Buddhist statues and artifacts. Gangō-ji provides a unique opportunity to experience the history and art of early Japanese Buddhism in a peaceful setting, away from the crowds of Nara's more famous temples.
