    Discover more about Giōji

Nestled in the Arashiyama district of Kyoto, Giō-ji is a tranquil temple steeped in history and natural beauty. The temple's origins are linked to the poignant story of Giō, a dancer who, according to "The Tale of the Heike," was once favored by the powerful military leader Taira no Kiyomori. When Kiyomori's affections shifted to another, Giō, along with her mother and sister, retreated to this temple to become nuns, dedicating their lives to Buddhism. Giō-ji's main attraction is its stunning moss garden, home to over 120 species of moss. This lush green carpet, punctuated by maple trees and delicate ferns, creates a serene and meditative atmosphere. The garden's beauty evolves with the seasons, offering unique vistas throughout the year. In spring, cherry blossoms gently fall onto the moss, while autumn brings a vibrant contrast of red maple leaves against the green moss. The temple's main hall, a modest thatched-roof building, houses wooden statues of Giō, her sister, their mother, and Hotoke Gozen, another of Kiyomori's spurned lovers who later joined them in the temple. A statue of Dainichi Nyorai, the Buddha of Cosmic Light and Wisdom, is also enshrined here. A noteworthy circular window in the main hall, known as the Yoshino Window, frames the surrounding greenery, creating a picturesque view. Giō-ji offers visitors a chance to connect with Japanese history, appreciate natural beauty, and experience a sense of tranquility. The temple's small size and intimate atmosphere contribute to its charm, making it a hidden gem worth exploring in Arashiyama.
