Horikoshi Jinja: A Shrine of Wishes

Nestled in Osaka's Tennoji Ward, Horikoshi Jinja is a Shinto shrine with a rich history and a reputation for granting wishes. Founded by Prince Shotoku in conjunction with the construction of Shitennoji Temple, it is dedicated to Emperor Sushun. The shrine is one of the Seven Shrines of Shitennoji, originally built to protect the temple. The name 'Horikoshi' translates to 'crossing the moat,' derived from a moat that once bordered the shrine until the mid-Meiji period. The shrine has been venerated for its ability to grant a 'once-in-a-lifetime wish,' attracting worshippers from across Japan. Visitors can participate in the 'Hitoyume Prayer,' writing their wish on a strip of paper and praying for an amulet. The grounds feature several notable elements, including the Chausuyama Inari Shrine, believed to bring prosperity. This shrine was originally located atop Chausuyama and is said to have saved Tokugawa Ieyasu during the Osaka Summer Campaign. Another significant site is the Kumano Daiichi Oji Shrine, marking the starting point for Kumano pilgrimages. Despite facing the busy Tanimachi-suji street, the shrine maintains a tranquil atmosphere with ancient trees and peaceful pathways.
