Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall: A Glimpse into Sino-Japanese History
Explore the legacy of Sun Yat-sen at this unique Kobe memorial hall, blending Chinese history with Japanese architectural heritage in a scenic park setting.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, or Ijokaku, stands as a testament to the historical ties between China and Japan, honoring the life and legacy of Sun Yat-sen, a pivotal figure in the Chinese Revolution. This unique museum is housed within a distinctive three-story octagonal building, originally constructed in 1915 as an annex to the Shokai Villa of wealthy Chinese merchant Wu Jintang. Located in Maiko Park, the hall provides a serene setting with views of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge. The building itself is a rare example of wooden-frame concrete block construction and was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2001. Known locally as "Maiko's Rokkakudo" due to its hexagonal appearance, Ijokaku offers visitors a glimpse into the past through its exhibits on Sun Yat-sen's activities in Japan, the life of Wu Jintang, and the building's own fascinating history. Visitors can explore displays featuring valuable documents, calligraphy, and other artifacts related to Sun Yat-sen. The exhibits, presented in Japanese, English, and Chinese, shed light on the relationships between Japan, Kobe, and Sun Yat-sen. The hall is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with entry until 4:30 pm. It is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a national holiday) and during the New Year season (December 29th to January 3rd). Admission is 300 yen for adults, with discounts for seniors and free entry for children and visitors with disabilities.
