Discover more about Shitenno-ji

Shitenno-ji Temple, located in Osaka, is more than just a historical site; it's a journey through the evolution of Buddhism in Japan. Founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, a key figure in introducing Buddhism to Japan, it stands as one of the country's oldest and most important temples. The temple is dedicated to the Shitenno, the Four Heavenly Kings who guard the world from evil. Over the centuries, Shitenno-ji has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt, with the current structures largely dating back to the 1960s. Despite these reconstructions, the temple maintains its original design, reflecting the architectural style of the Asuka period. The temple complex includes several key structures, such as the Kondo (Main Hall), a five-story pagoda, and the Kodo (Lecture Hall), all arranged in a straight line from south to north. Visitors can explore the inner precinct (Chushin Garan), the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, and the Treasure House, each offering a unique glimpse into Buddhist art and history. The Gokuraku-jodo Garden, inspired by the Western Paradise of the Amida Buddha, provides a tranquil escape with its ponds, streams, and cherry trees. The Treasure House displays a collection of Buddhist statues, paintings, and other valuable artifacts. Shitenno-ji also hosts various events and festivals throughout the year, including a monthly flea market on the 21st and 22nd of each month and the Shoryoe Bugaku Daihoyo, a traditional dance performance held every April 22nd. These events offer visitors a chance to experience the temple's lively atmosphere and cultural significance.
