Discover more about Yajima kyōjima

Yajima Kyōjima, meaning "Arrow Island" and "Sutra Island" respectively, are two small islands linked by a vibrant red arched bridge in Ogi, Sado Island. Yajima's name comes from the legend of Minamoto no Yorimasa, whose arrow used to slay the mythical Nue was made from Yajima bamboo. Kyojima is named after Nichiro, a Buddhist monk who sought shelter on the island during a storm and spent the night reciting sutras. Visitors can explore the islands, enjoy the views, and experience a ride in a *tarai-bune* (tub boat). These traditional wooden tub-shaped boats were originally used for collecting seaweed and shellfish. The area is known for its clear, translucent waters, making it a popular spot for sightseeing and photography. The rugged coastline and lush greenery add to the islands' serene atmosphere. Kaichoji Temple, an old Soto Zen school temple, is located on the hill leading down to Yajima and Kyojima and is known for its Goshozakura cherry blossom trees.
