Discover more about Dobuita Street

Dobuita Street, located in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, is a unique destination where Japanese and American cultures intertwine. This lively street, approximately 300 meters long, boasts around 150 diverse shops and restaurants, creating a vibrant atmosphere that attracts tourists from Japan and abroad. The street's history dates back to the post-World War II era when the nearby U.S. Naval Base significantly influenced the area. This influence led to a fusion of cultures, evident in the street's architecture, shops, and culinary offerings. Dobuita Street is known as the birthplace of the 'Sukajan,' souvenir jackets featuring oriental embroidery that have become a global fashion icon. The street's name, 'Dobuita,' has an interesting origin. During the early 20th century, a drainage ditch ('dobu' in Japanese) ran through the center of the street. To prevent disruption, the Japanese Imperial Navy provided thick steel plates ('ita') to cover the ditch, leading to the street being called Dobuita Street. Today, Dobuita Street offers a wide array of experiences. Visitors can explore shops selling military goods, Yokosuka-themed souvenirs, and vintage Americana. The street is also a culinary hotspot, offering Yokosuka Navy Burgers, Navy Curry, and cherry cheesecake. As evening approaches, Dobuita Street transforms into a lively entertainment district with American-style bars and live music venues.
