    Discover more about Naruto Whirlpools

The Naruto Whirlpools (鳴門の渦潮, Naruto no Uzushio) are a spectacular display of nature's power, formed in the Naruto Strait between the city of Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture and Awaji Island in Hyogo Prefecture. This narrow channel, only about 1.3 km wide, connects the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean, causing large volumes of water to rush through it with each tide. The whirlpools are created by the difference in water levels between the two bodies of water, which can be up to 1.5 meters. As the tide ebbs and flows, water surges through the strait at speeds of 13-15 km/h, reaching up to 20 km/h during spring tides. This creates powerful vortices that can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. The whirlpools are largest during the spring and autumn seasons. There are several ways to witness this incredible phenomenon. Sightseeing cruises offer the closest views, taking you right up to the swirling waters. For a different perspective, visit Uzu no Michi, an enclosed walkway under the Onaruto Bridge, with glass-floored observation points 45 meters above the whirlpools. Naruto Park also provides various viewpoints overlooking the strait and the Onaruto Bridge. The whirlpools have inspired art, folklore, and even the name of the popular manga character Naruto Uzumaki, whose last name means "whirlpool" in Japanese. Whether you're a nature enthusiast or simply seeking a unique travel experience, the Naruto Whirlpools offer an unforgettable sight.
