Discover more about Moerenuma Park

Moerenuma Park, located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is a testament to the vision of Japanese-American sculptor Isamu Noguchi, who conceived the park as a single, unified sculpture. Spanning approximately 189 hectares, this expansive park was ingeniously built on a former waste treatment plant, transforming it into a landscape that seamlessly blends art and nature. Construction began in 1982, and the park officially opened in 2005, becoming a key component of Sapporo's 'Circular Greenbelt Concept'. Noguchi's design incorporates geometric forms and natural elements to create a dynamic and engaging space. Key features include Mount Moere, a 62-meter-high artificial mountain offering panoramic views of the park and the city. The Glass Pyramid, named 'Hidamari' (sunny spot), serves as the park's central hub, housing a gallery dedicated to Noguchi's work, a restaurant, and spaces for cultural activities. The Sea Fountain, a dynamic water sculpture, shoots water up to 25 meters in the air during scheduled shows. Visitors can explore various zones, including the Forest of Cherry Trees with its 126 pieces of playground equipment designed by Noguchi, and Moere Beach, a shallow pond popular during summer. The Tetra Mound, a triangular stainless steel structure, adds to the park's artistic landscape. The park offers seasonal attractions, with cherry blossoms in spring, water play in summer, vibrant foliage in autumn, and winter activities like cross-country skiing and sledding. Moerenuma Park is not just a recreational space but a comprehensive art experience, reflecting Noguchi's vision of integrating art into the environment. The park is open year-round, with free admission and parking, making it accessible to all.
