Discover more about Happo-en

Happo-en, meaning "garden of eight views," is a meticulously landscaped Japanese garden in the Shirokanedai district of Tokyo. The garden spans approximately 33,000 square meters and provides a serene escape from the surrounding urban environment. Originally, the site was the residence of Okubo Tadataka, a samurai close to the Tokugawa family during the Edo period. Later, it was acquired by influential businessmen who developed the garden and its structures. The name Happo-en was given during the Showa era, signifying the landscape's beauty from every angle. The garden features a central pond with koi carp, ancient bonsai trees (some over 500 years old), a relocated Meiji-era teahouse, and diverse seasonal plants. Stone lanterns, pagodas, and meticulously pruned trees add to the traditional ambiance. The garden is known for its seasonal beauty, with cherry blossoms in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn. Happo-en also serves as a popular venue for weddings, banquets, and other events. Within the garden, there are restaurants and cafes offering views of the landscape. Visitors can experience a traditional tea ceremony in the Muan teahouse. Note that Happo-en is scheduled to be closed for renovation from February 1, 2025, with a planned reopening on October 1, 2025.
