Kanzanji Temple, located in Ome, Tokyo, provides a tranquil contrast to the vibrant metropolis. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Tama River, the temple was established in 1930 by calligrapher Taguchi Beiho on land donated by Ozawa Taihei, president of the Ome Railway Company. Taguchi, who studied calligraphy at the historic Hanshan Temple in Suzhou, China, enshrined a wooden Shakyamuni Buddha figure here that he brought back from his studies. Visitors can admire the 36 unique painted panels adorning the temple's ceiling, each crafted by different accomplished artists and depicting flowers, animals, and landscapes. Ringing the large bronze bell near the temple offers a deeply satisfying experience with great views. Kanzanji provides a calming space for contemplation and a chance to connect with nature. Ome itself, a short train ride from central Tokyo, exudes a Showa-era charm, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Japan's past with its retro museums and tranquil environment. The Tama River offers opportunities for fishing and riverside strolls.
