Discover more about The Shoto Museum of Art

The Shoto Museum of Art, opened in 1981, resides in Shibuya's quiet, upscale Shoto district. Designed by architect Seiichi Shirai, the museum's architecture is as much a draw as the art itself. Shirai, known as a “philosophical architect,” created a space that is both intimate and grand, featuring a fountain and bridge in the central atrium, and a spiral staircase. The building's height is intentionally limited to harmonize with the surrounding residential area. The museum hosts around five special exhibitions each year, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and crafts from various periods and disciplines. It also holds smaller salon exhibitions that showcase local artists connected to Shibuya, as well as open exhibitions featuring art by local students. The museum occasionally hosts music concerts, lectures, gallery talks and art classes. Visitors can explore the museum's unique architecture by taking the spiral staircase, or use the elevator for accessibility. Photography is permitted unless otherwise stated, but flash, tripods and video recording are prohibited.
