Discover more about Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse 1

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, known locally as Akarenga Soko, is more than just a historical landmark; it's a vibrant destination where the past and present seamlessly merge. Constructed between 1894 and 1913 during the Meiji era, these red brick buildings initially served as customs warehouses for Yokohama Port, Japan's first modern port. Designed by Japanese architect Tsumaki Yorinaka, the warehouses showcase Western architectural influences, reflecting Japan's embrace of Western technology and culture during that period. The warehouses played a crucial role in storing goods brought in from overseas, supporting Yokohama's development as a key international trading port. The buildings' sturdy construction, reinforced with iron, allowed them to withstand the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, though repairs continued until 1930. After World War II, the American occupation forces requisitioned the warehouses between 1945 and 1956. With the rise of containerization, their use as customs houses declined, and they were eventually closed in 1989. In 1992, the city of Yokohama took over the buildings and began a restoration project led by Naoshi Kawabata. The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse reopened in 2002 as a cultural and commercial complex, revitalizing the waterfront area. Today, Warehouse No. 1 hosts art exhibitions, film festivals, concerts, and plays, while Warehouse No. 2 features a shopping mall, restaurants, and cafes. The complex also includes Red Brick Park, a spacious green area perfect for relaxation and enjoying views of Yokohama Port. Throughout the year, the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse hosts various seasonal events, including Oktoberfest, Christmas Market, and Taiwan Festival, drawing large crowds and adding to the area's lively atmosphere.
