The Suntory Hakushu Distillery, established in 1973, is a captivating destination for whisky enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. Located in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, at the foot of Mount Kaikoma in the Japanese Alps, the distillery is surrounded by a lush forest, earning it the nickname 'forest distillery'. The location was carefully chosen for its access to pristine water, essential for whisky production. The distillery offers tours that provide insight into the whisky-making process, from fermentation in wooden vats to distillation in a variety of pot stills. Hakushu boasts a diverse collection of stills, each contributing unique flavors to the final product. Visitors can also explore the warehouses where the whisky matures, taking in the intoxicating aroma of aging spirits. The tour typically culminates in a tasting session, allowing guests to sample different Hakushu expressions. Beyond the production facilities, the Hakushu Distillery features a museum showcasing the history of Suntory whisky and the art of distillation. A restaurant offers carefully paired cuisine to complement the whiskies. The grounds also include a bird sanctuary, highlighting Suntory's commitment to preserving the natural environment. Note that from July 9th to August 9th, 2025, some of the production area will not be operating due to facility maintenance.
