Tenso Shrine, located on the banks of Lake Kinrin in Yufuin, is a small, historic shrine with a peaceful atmosphere. Said to have been established around 82 AD, the shrine is dedicated to the ancestral deities of the emperor. The shrine's main hall enshrines Tensojin in the center, with Yasaka Shrine to the right and Konpira Shrine to the left. A stone torii gate stands in the lake, creating a picturesque scene, especially when the morning mist rises. The shrine is also known for its large, sacred cedar tree, designated as a natural monument and considered one of the largest in the prefecture. Legend has it that a dragon promised to protect the land by providing clear water in exchange for a resting place, which is why clear water springs from the lakebed and the shrine grounds. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the shrine, appreciate the natural beauty of Lake Kinrin, and admire the ancient cedar tree. The shrine provides a serene escape and a connection to the spiritual heart of Yufuin.
