Zao Echo Line: A Scenic Mountain Traverse

The Zao Echo Line is a picturesque mountain road that winds through the Zao Mountain range, offering stunning views that change dramatically with the seasons. Opened in November 1962, the 26-kilometer route links Zao Town in Miyagi Prefecture with Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture. In spring, particularly from late April to mid-May, the road is famous for its towering snow walls, created by heavy winter snowfall. As the snow melts, the road is cleared, leaving behind impressive walls of snow on either side. Summer brings refreshing greenery, with lush foliage creating a cool and invigorating atmosphere. Autumn is perhaps the most popular time to visit, as the leaves transform into a vibrant tapestry of reds, yellows, and oranges. Beech and maple trees line the road, creating a stunning spectacle that attracts many tourists. The fall foliage season typically lasts from late September to late October. Along the way, a large torii gate marks the entrance to the Echo Line. Takimidai offers views of the Sankai and Fudo waterfalls. It is important to note that the Zao Echo Line is generally closed from early November to late April due to heavy snow and icy conditions. There may also be nighttime closures before and after the winter season.
