Discover more about Battery Lothringen

Battery Lothringen, situated on Noirmont Point in Jersey, stands as a powerful reminder of the island's strategic importance during World War II. Constructed by the German forces between 1941 and 1945, the battery formed part of the Atlantic Wall, a vast system of coastal fortifications designed to defend against Allied invasions. Named after the German Imperial Navy Ship SMS Lothringen, the site offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore well-preserved military structures and experience a tangible connection to the past. The battery consisted of four 15 cm SK L/45 naval guns manufactured by Krupp in 1917. These guns were positioned on elevated concrete platforms, offering a wide field of fire across St. Aubin's Bay. Today, visitors can walk through the open bunkers, explore the command bunker with its rangefinder and observation cupolas, and imagine the intense activity that once filled this strategic location. One of the original gun barrels, recovered in the 1990s, is now on display in Gun Emplacement Number One. Noirmont Point itself has a rich history, serving as a memorial to Jersey people who died during the occupation. The headland offers stunning views and diverse wildlife, making it a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The combination of historical significance and natural beauty creates a memorable experience for all. Informative plaques throughout the site provide context and details about the battery's construction and its role during the war, enriching the visitor experience.
