Discover more about La Crête Fort

La Crête Fort, overlooking Bonne Nuit Bay, is a testament to Jersey's strategic importance throughout history. Originally militarized in the 16th century, the current fort was constructed in 1834 as part of an island-wide defensive strategy against potential French invasion. The name Bonne Nuit, French for 'good night,' reflects the bay's reputation as a quiet and peaceful mooring. Over the years, the fort has served various roles. After the threat of French invasion receded, it became a summer residence for the island's Lieutenant Governor. During the German occupation in World War II, the fort was modified with bunkers for machine guns, a searchlight, and anti-tank weapons. A mortar emplacement can still be seen within the rocks opposite the entrance. In 2006, the Lieutenant Governor relinquished the building to the Public of the Island of Jersey, and it is now under the administration of the Jersey Heritage Trust. The fort was renovated as part of the Forts and Towers project and now serves as unique holiday accommodation. Visitors can explore the fort's various levels, accessed by granite or concrete steps, and enjoy panoramic views of the sea and surrounding coastline. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Jersey's military past and a chance to experience the island's natural beauty.
