Discover more about La Hougue Bie Museum

La Hougue Bie Museum, located in Grouville, Jersey, is a unique historical site that offers visitors a journey through time, revealing traces of life on the island from the Neolithic period to the German Occupation during World War II. The centerpiece of the museum is the Neolithic passage grave, one of the ten oldest buildings in the world, dating back to 4000-3500 BC. This ancient chamber served as a sacred space for rituals and ceremonies, aligned with the rising sun during the spring and summer equinoxes. Visitors can enter the chamber and experience the atmosphere of this ancient site. On top of the prehistoric mound sits a 16th-century Christian chapel, offering spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The site also features a replica Neolithic Longhouse, constructed by volunteers using traditional methods, providing insight into life in the New Stone Age. Additionally, a German command bunker from World War II serves as a memorial to the forced workers brought to Jersey by Organisation Todt. The museum houses an archaeology and geology collection, including coin hoards, axes, and spears, with a significant exhibit dedicated to the world's largest Celtic coin hoard, Le Câtillon II, discovered in Jersey. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours, workshops, and events throughout the year. The site includes a tea room, gift shop, and picnic area.
