History of Delano

A West-Side Settlement

Delano developed on the west side of the Arkansas River as Wichita expanded from its original settlement on the eastern bank. The area formed part of the town’s early western approach and became associated with the movement of cattle, goods and travellers through the newly established Wichita community. Its name is generally linked to Delano Township, which was named for Columbus Delano, a nineteenth-century American political figure. Rather than beginning as a planned civic centre, the district grew through its practical position beside routes leading into Wichita from the west.

Cattle, Commerce and Douglas Avenue

During the late nineteenth century, Delano’s proximity to Wichita’s cattle commerce helped give it a rough, commercially minded reputation. Hotels, saloons, shops and other businesses served people passing through the city, while the river crossing connected the district with downtown and the rail and market infrastructure on the east side. As Wichita matured, Douglas Avenue became the principal east-west route through Delano, and the neighbourhood shifted from a frontier stopping place towards a permanent mixed residential and commercial district.

From Outpost to City District

Wichita’s incorporation and rapid growth brought Delano increasingly within the city’s urban fabric. Improved streets, bridges and public services reduced the west side’s separation from downtown, while changing transport patterns and the decline of the cattle-drive era altered its commercial identity. Older buildings along Douglas Avenue preserve traces of this transition: their scale reflects a district designed for local trade and passing customers rather than the larger commercial blocks that developed in central Wichita.

Revival Along the Avenue

In recent decades, Delano has retained its historic name while attracting renewed attention to its traditional commercial corridor. Restaurants, bars, specialist retailers, public art and improvements around Delano Park have strengthened the avenue as a place for local activity without erasing its residential character.
