Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Almaty city center. Head southeast on Abai Avenue toward Kerey and Zhanibek Khans Street. Continue straight for approximately 8 km until you reach the intersection with the Almaty Ring Road (A2). Take the A2 highway towards the southeast for about 25 km. Look for signs indicating 'Shymbulak' as you approach the mountains. Turn off the A2 onto the road serving the resort area and follow the signs to Shymbulak. Parking is available at the resort. Note that there may be fees for parking.
Public Transportation
From the Almaty city center, take bus number 12 or 28 from the main bus terminal (Vokzal). These buses run frequently, approximately every 15-20 minutes. Stay on the bus for about 30-40 minutes until you reach the last stop at the 'Shymbulak' terminus. You may need to purchase a bus ticket from the kiosk at the terminal or pay the conductor. From the bus stop, it’s a short walk (about 10 minutes) uphill to the resort area.
Taxi or Ride-Hailing Service
For a more convenient option, consider taking a taxi or using a ride-hailing app such as Yandex.Taxi or Bolt. You can book a ride from any location in Almaty directly to Shymbulak. The journey typically takes about 30 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 3000-5000 KZT. Make sure to confirm the fare with the driver before starting your trip.
Cable Car
Once you arrive at Shymbulak, if you wish to explore higher altitudes, you can take the cable car to access various hiking trails and breathtaking views. Tickets for the cable car can be purchased at the base station. Prices vary depending on the season and package selected, typically ranging from 1500 to 4500 KZT for a round trip.
Use Shymbulak as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
