Car
If you're driving from major towns in Central Highlands, take the A2 highway towards Kitale. Once you reach Kitale, follow the signs for the Cherangani Hills. You'll need to take the B4 road, which leads directly to the hills. The drive should take approximately 2-3 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Be aware that some sections of the road may be unpaved, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the best experience.
Public Transportation - Matatus
From towns like Nyeri or Nanyuki, you can catch a matatu (shared taxi) heading towards Kitale. The fare is typically around 300 to 500 Kenyan Shillings depending on the distance. Once in Kitale, you'll need to find another matatu that goes towards the Cherangani Hills. The fare for this second leg is approximately 100 to 200 Kenyan Shillings. Make sure to ask the driver to drop you off at the most convenient spot for accessing the hills.
Public Transportation - Buses
You can take a long-distance bus from Nairobi to Kitale, which costs between 800 to 1500 Kenyan Shillings. Once you arrive in Kitale, follow the same procedure as with the matatus. Look for local transport that can take you to the Cherangani Hills. Depending on the bus schedule, this journey could take between 6-8 hours, so plan accordingly.
Hiking or Walking
Once you reach the base of the Cherangani Hills, you can choose to hike up the trails that lead to various viewpoints and peaks. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry enough water and snacks. The trails vary in difficulty, so assess your skill level before starting. Guided hikes are also available if you prefer companionship and local knowledge.
