Getting there

Car

If you're traveling by car within Mount Elgon National Park, start from the park entrance and drive towards the town of Kitale. Follow the main road which is well-marked. After approximately 30 kilometers, keep an eye out for the WXQR+5W coordinates, which will guide you to Wamuini dam. The dam is located to the west of Kitale, and you should look for signs indicating the direction to the dam as you approach Kitale. The drive should take around 45 minutes, depending on the road conditions.

Public Transportation

To reach Wamuini dam using public transportation, take a matatu (shared taxi) from the main bus terminal in the park towards Kitale. Make sure to inform the driver that you want to get off at or near Wamuini dam. The journey will take about 1 hour. Once you arrive in Kitale, you can either take a local taxi or walk to reach the dam, which is about 5 kilometers away from the town center. Be prepared for a short walk, and if needed, ask locals for assistance.

Hiking

For the adventurous tourists, you can opt to hike to Wamuini dam from the nearest camping site in Mount Elgon National Park. This hike will take about 2 to 3 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to carry sufficient water and snacks.
