Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Cathedral Rock.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you're driving, start from the nearest town, Loiyangalani. Head north on the main road (C77) for approximately 20 kilometers. Keep your eyes peeled for signs pointing towards Cathedral Rock. The road may be rough, so ensure your vehicle is suitable for off-road conditions. As you approach the site, you will see the distinctive rock formation rising in the distance.
Public Transportation
To access Cathedral Rock via public transportation, take a matatu (shared taxi) from Loiyangalani heading towards Kalokol. Inform the driver to drop you off at the junction leading to Cathedral Rock. This ride should cost approximately 200 KES. From the drop-off point, you can either walk the remaining 10 kilometers to Cathedral Rock or hire a local motorcycle taxi (boda-boda) for about 300 KES to take you closer to the site.
Walking
If you're feeling adventurous and have the time, consider walking from the drop-off point after taking the matatu. The route is straightforward, following the dirt path that leads directly to Cathedral Rock. Ensure you have plenty of water and sun protection, as this journey can take around 2-3 hours on foot.
Local Guides
Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for a more informative trip. They can be arranged in Loiyangalani for approximately 1,500 KES for a half-day tour. They will not only help you navigate but also provide insights into the local culture and history of Cathedral Rock.
