Car
If you are driving, first make your way to the mainland port of Mokowe, which is approximately 20 kilometers from Lamu Town. From Lamu Town, head towards Mokowe via the Lamu-Mokowe Road. Once you arrive at Mokowe, you will need to park your car at the designated parking area. Be aware that there may be parking fees, usually around 200-500 KES per day. After parking, you will take a boat from Mokowe to Lamu Island, which typically costs around 50-100 KES per person and takes about 30 minutes.
Public Transportation (Matatu)
From any location within Lamu Archipelago, find a matatu (shared minibus) heading to Mokowe. These matatus operate frequently, and the fare should be around 150-300 KES depending on your starting point. The ride will take approximately 30 minutes. Upon reaching Mokowe, disembark and walk to the port to catch a boat to Lamu Island. The boat fare is typically 50-100 KES and takes about 30 minutes.
Boat Services
If you are already on another island in the Lamu Archipelago, such as Manda Island, you can take a direct boat service to Lamu Island. Check with local boat operators for schedules, which may vary throughout the day. The cost for this service is usually around 200-500 KES per person, depending on the distance and the operator. The journey from Manda Island to Lamu Island takes about 15-30 minutes.
