Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car within Mount Elgon National Park, head towards the area near the Lwanda rocks, which can be accessed via well-maintained park roads. Start from the park headquarters in Kapkota. Drive along the main park road, following the signs towards the Lwanda region. After approximately 12 kilometers, you will reach a junction; take the left turn towards Lwanda rocks. Continue for about 5 kilometers until you reach the parking area near Lwanda rocks. Ensure your vehicle is suitable for rough terrain, as some sections may be bumpy.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, your journey will begin in the nearest town, Mbale. From Mbale, you can take a matatu (shared taxi) to the Mount Elgon National Park entrance. Once at the park entrance, you will need to hire a local guide or a taxi to take you to Lwanda rocks. The guide will be familiar with the trails and can help navigate the park's routes. It is advisable to negotiate the fare beforehand, which can range from 500 to 1500 Kenyan Shillings depending on the distance and the vehicle used.

• Hiking

  If you're feeling adventurous and are already in the vicinity of Lwanda rocks, you may opt to hike. Start from the closest lodge or campsite. Follow the marked trails; the hike should take about 2-3 hours depending on your fitness level. Make sure to carry enough water and snacks. The trails can be steep, so wear appropriate hiking shoes. It is recommended to go with a guide for safety and to enhance your experience.
