Car
If you're traveling by car within the Northern Frontier District, start by heading towards the main town in the region, which is Marsabit. From Marsabit, take the A2 highway heading south. Continue on the A2 for about 80 kilometers until you reach the junction near the town of Moyale. At the junction, follow the signs indicating the route towards Tafari Nation, which is located at latitude -0.7132178 and longitude 36.4347066. The drive will take approximately 2 hours, depending on road conditions. Make sure to refuel in Moyale as fuel stations are sparse in the area.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, start by taking a matatu (shared taxi) from Marsabit to Moyale. These matatus leave frequently and the journey takes about 2 hours. Once in Moyale, look for a local matatu or a taxi that can take you closer to Tafari Nation. You may need to negotiate the fare, which could range from KES 300 to KES 500 depending on the distance and availability. Be prepared for possible waiting times for the next matatu to fill up. Ask locals for the exact pickup points and confirm the drop-off location to ensure you reach Tafari Nation.
Motorbike Taxi
If you prefer a quicker and more adventurous option, consider hiring a motorbike taxi (boda boda) from Moyale. After arriving in Moyale, you can easily find motorbike taxis waiting at the main bus station. Agree on a fare before starting your journey; it should be around KES 400 to KES 600 depending on how far you are going. The ride to Tafari Nation is a thrilling experience as you navigate through local villages and scenic landscapes. Ensure the driver knows the exact location of Tafari Nation to avoid any confusion.
