Car Rental
If you're traveling by car, start from the town of Maralal. Head east on the A2 highway towards the Nanyuki Road. Continue driving for about 45 kilometers until you reach the junction for the Samburu National Reserve. Turn left onto the C77 road, which leads directly into the reserve. Follow the signs to Westgate. Sasaab is located within the reserve; look for the signposts that direct you to the lodge, which is approximately 15 kilometers from the main entrance to the reserve.
Public Transport
From Maralal, you can take a matatu (shared minibus) heading towards Samburu National Reserve. The fare is usually around 300 KES per person. Inform the driver that you want to go to Sasaab. They will drop you at the entrance of the reserve. From there, you may need to hire a local taxi or a 4x4 vehicle to take you to Sasaab, which is about a 15-kilometer drive within the reserve. Taxi fares can vary, but expect to pay around 1,500 KES for the ride.
Private Transfer
For a more comfortable option, consider booking a private transfer from Maralal or Nanyuki to Sasaab. Many tour companies offer this service, and you can arrange it in advance. The cost can range from 6,000 to 10,000 KES depending on the distance and vehicle type. This option allows you to enjoy the scenery without the hassle of navigating public transport.
