Getting There

• Car

  From the main entrance of Shaba National Reserve, head southeast on the main road towards the Laare area. Continue on this road for approximately 15 kilometers until you reach the coordinates 0.3731° N, 37.9602° E. Look for the Mount Water area noted by the location marker. There is limited parking available near the hiking area, so be prepared to park and walk a short distance to the main hiking trail.

• Public Transportation

  While public transportation options are limited within Shaba National Reserve, you can take a local matatu (shared minibus) from the nearest town to the reserve entrance. Ask the driver to drop you off at Laare, which is approximately 15 kilometers from Mount Water. Once you arrive in Laare, you may need to hire a local taxi or ask locals for directions to reach the coordinates 0.3731° N, 37.9602° E where Mount Water is located. Make sure to negotiate the fare in advance with the taxi driver.

• Hiking

  If you are already within the Shaba National Reserve and prefer to hike, begin at the nearest lodge or camping area. Follow the well-marked trails towards Laare; this will take about 3-4 hours depending on your pace. Ensure you carry enough water and snacks for the hike, as there are no facilities along the way. Once you reach the vicinity of Mount Water, look for signposts or ask other hikers for guidance.
