History of Salmiya

From Coastal Settlement to Suburb

Before Kuwait’s oil-era expansion, the Salmiya coast was associated with maritime activity, fishing and pearling, as were many settlements along Kuwait Bay. Its position beside the water gave it a practical relationship with the sea, while its name reflects the area’s longstanding local identity. The neighbourhood was not initially a dense urban district: settlement was comparatively dispersed, and the coast and open land shaped daily life more strongly than the multi-lane roads and apartment blocks visible today.

Oil Wealth and Urban Expansion

Kuwait’s oil revenues transformed Salmiya during the twentieth century, particularly after the country’s rapid post-war development. Road building, new housing and rising commercial demand connected the coastal settlement more closely with Kuwait City and neighbouring Hawalli districts. Villas and later apartment buildings replaced much of the earlier low-density landscape, while schools, mosques, shops and public services established Salmiya as a substantial residential suburb. The Gulf Road became an important metropolitan route as the shoreline was incorporated into the city’s expanding leisure geography.

A Commercial and Residential Crossroads

As Kuwait’s population and consumer economy grew, Salmiya developed a strong commercial role alongside its residential one.
