Trekking to Ala Kul Lake - Best of Tian Shan Mountains
Highly recommend this incredible trek, but not for faint-hearted!
My mum and I spent an incredible week in the Tian Shan mountains with lovely local guide, Erlan. Everything ran very smoothly, and all food (prepared for us at every site + pack lunches) was plentiful and absolutely delicious! We hired sleeping bags which were fab, but did not hire porters or poles. Be prepared for unexpected weather - we had boiling sunshine, deep snow, and torrential rain all in the space of a few days. The trek is tough going in places as the ascents and descents can be very steep, especially with a heavy pack, so if you are in doubts about your fitness or aren’t fond of heights, don’t hesitaste to employ a porter! All campsite staff were friendly and helpful, although speaking Russian/Kyrgyz will get you a lot further than English.

In August 2026, we had the pleasure of taking part in the ‘Best of Kyrgyzstan Trek’ organised by Visit Alay. It was a wonderful trek that allowed us to explore the beautiful and varied landscapes of the whole of Kyrgyzstan, and in particular the Tien Shan, Pamir and Alay mountains.
