There are few gas stations along the route, so ensure your tank is full before you leave.

To reach Phou Lao using public transportation, take a bus or shared taxi from Pak Beng to the nearest town, which is Huay Xai. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs approximately 20,000 LAK. Once in Huay Xai, you can hire a local truck (often called a 'songthaew') for about 50,000 LAK per person to take you closer to the base of Phou Lao. Ensure you negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices can vary. The truck ride will take around 30 minutes. From the drop-off point, you may need to hike the final stretch to the peak.
