Discover more about Kuang Si Waterfall

Kuang Si Waterfall, also known as Kuang Xi or Tat Kuang Si, is a breathtaking natural landmark in Laos. The three-tiered waterfall cascades down a steep hillside, creating a series of shallow, turquoise pools. The main waterfall has a 60-meter drop, and the surrounding jungle adds to the idyllic scenery. The falls are named after a legend involving a wise old man, a hole he dug that revealed the waters of Nam Si, and a golden deer that made its home under a rock near the falls. 'Kuang' means deer, and 'Si' means to dig. The rock was said to create an enchanting echo when the water fell on it, drawing people from afar, but it was destroyed in an earthquake in 2001. The water's unique turquoise color is due to the high concentration of calcium carbonate from flowing over limestone rocks. This mineral reflects light, creating the stunning pearlescent blue hue. The falls transform throughout the year; the dry season (November to April/May) brings clear, vibrant blue water perfect for swimming, while the wet season (June to October) turns the falls into a powerful torrent, potentially unsafe for swimming. Visitors can hike to the top of the waterfall for panoramic views, explore the surrounding trails, and visit the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre, home to rescued Asiatic black bears.
