Discover more about Pak Ou Caves

The Pak Ou Caves, also known as the Buddha Caves, are a captivating testament to Lao spirituality and history. Located 25 km north of Luang Prabang, these caves are set dramatically in a limestone cliffside at the confluence of the Mekong and Ou Rivers. The caves are not just a geological wonder but a repository of thousands of Buddha images, big and small. The caves consist of two main chambers: Tham Ting (the lower cave) and Tham Theung (the upper cave). Tham Ting, easily accessible from the river, is filled with over 2,500 Buddha images. Tham Theung, requires a climb up a series of steps, houses over 1,500 images and offers a more secluded and dimly lit atmosphere. Many statues are hidden in the dark, so flashlights can be useful. The statues, crafted from wood, resin, earthenware, and even animal bones, showcase various mudras (positions) and are painted in red or black and covered with gold.Originally a site for spirit worship in the 8th century, the caves transitioned to Buddhist use by the 16th century. Kings of Luang Prabang made annual pilgrimages to the caves, participating in a washing ceremony during Lao New Year. The caves became a repository for old, damaged, or simply retired Buddha statues, a tradition that continues to this day. Exploring the caves offers a unique insight into the enduring faith and artistic heritage of the Lao people.
