Overview
Wat Aham, or the "Monastery of the Opened Heart", is a serene temple in Luang Prabang with a rich history blending Buddhism and animism. The temple was constructed in 1818, but its origins trace back to a much older temple from 1527. The site was initially a shrine dedicated to Pu No and Na No, the guardian spirits of Luang Prabang.King Phothisarath, a devout Buddhist, destroyed the original spirit shrines in the 16th century and built a Buddhist temple in their place. However, disasters that followed were attributed to the destruction of the shrines, leading to their eventual reconstruction. In the 20th century, when the spirit houses were again destroyed, locals believed the spirits took residence in the two large banyan trees on the temple grounds. These trees still stand today, marking the holy site. The temple's sim (ordination hall) features a three-tiered roof and a front façade adorned with intricate gold and red decorations. Inside, vibrant murals depict scenes from the Jataka tales, illustrating the previous lives of Buddha, as well as graphic depictions of Buddhist hell. The main Buddha image is a large, seated figure on an elaborate pedestal, surrounded by smaller images.Wat Aham offers a tranquil escape from the more crowded temples in Luang Prabang. Visitors can explore the colorful interior, admire the traditional Lao architecture, and learn about the unique history of the site. The temple provides a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs of the Lao people and the co-existence of Buddhism and spirit worship.
