Discover more about Wat Chomphet

Wat Chomphet, also known as Wat Chom Phet Satni Silimoungknoun Vaxi Alram, sits on a hilltop in Ban Xieng Maen, offering breathtaking views of Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. Founded in 1888 by Chaophraya Surasakmontri, a Siamese military commander, the temple's origins are intertwined with the suppression of the Chinese Haw who had previously sacked the town. To reach the temple, prepare for a climb of 123 steps. While the temple is in a state of disrepair, with some restoration underway since late 2023, it exudes a unique charm. The ceiling still features stenciled dragons and swans, auspicious symbols for Chaophraya Surasakmontri. Wat Chomphet once served as an important royal temple, hosting coronation ceremonies. The two stupas at the rear of the sim (main hall) contain the remains of King Ounkham (r. 1868 - 1895) and his mother, Princess Khammoun. Visitors can explore the temple grounds, appreciate the traditional Laotian architecture, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere. The temple is open daily, providing ample opportunity to experience its spiritual significance and historical backdrop. A visit to Wat Chomphet can be combined with explorations of other temples in the area, such as Wat Xieng Maen and Wat Long Khun.
