Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major town, which is likely to be either Luang Prabang or Vientiane, depending on your location in the Mekong River Valley. From Luang Prabang, head south on Route 13. After approximately 200 kilometers, look for signs directing you toward the town of Pakxong. Continue on the Route 13 until you reach the junction near Pakxong. Turn onto Route 20, and follow the signs for Tham Pha Ka. The cave is located approximately 15 kilometers from the junction. Parking is available near the entrance of the cave.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Tham Pha Ka via public transportation, start by taking a bus from Luang Prabang or Vientiane to Pakxong. Buses leave frequently from both cities, with tickets costing around 50,000 to 100,000 LAK (approximately $5 to $10 USD). Upon arriving in Pakxong, you can hire a tuk-tuk or a songthaew (shared taxi) to take you the remaining 15 kilometers to Tham Pha Ka. The cost for the tuk-tuk ride will be about 20,000 to 30,000 LAK (approximately $2 to $3 USD) per person, depending on the number of passengers.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous traveler, renting a bicycle in Pakxong is a great way to reach Tham Pha Ka. After arriving in Pakxong via bus, you can rent a bicycle for around 20,000 LAK (approximately $2 USD) per day. Follow Route 20 from Pakxong, which is a scenic route leading to the cave. The ride is about 15 kilometers and takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks for the journey.
