Tham Pha Ka, also known as Tham Phaka, is situated in the Vientiane Province of Laos, roughly 22 kilometers north of Muang Met. This karst limestone river cave is traversed by the Nam Fuang River, a tributary of the Mekong. Tham Pha Ka is considered potentially the largest cave in Laos; nearly 9 km of the cave system has been surveyed, with a recorded height of 120 m and width of 400 m.Local people have historically used the cave for guano extraction and religious retreats. The Lao government has presented Tham Pha Ka as an ideal site for ecotourism development. Recent explorations have highlighted the cave's exceptional features, sparking interest in its potential as a tourist destination.Inside the cave, visitors can witness stunning stalactites and stalagmites formed over centuries. The cave's natural chambers and intricate rock formations offer a striking visual experience. The cool, refreshing air inside provides a welcome contrast to the outside.However, the planned Nam Fuang Hydropower Project poses a threat to Tham Pha Ka, potentially flooding most of the lower cave system.
