  • From Ban Houayxay

    The primary access point to Bokeo Nature Reserve is through the town of Ban Houayxay. From there, the Gibbon Experience provides transportation to the reserve as part of their tour packages. Since access to the reserve is exclusively through the Gibbon Experience, transportation costs are included in the tour price. Contact the Gibbon Experience office in Houayxay for bookings and transportation details.

Bokeo Nature Reserve, officially named Nam Kan National Protected Area, is located in the Bokeo Province of Laos. Established in 2004, the reserve spans 123,000 hectares of primary forests and mountainous terrain, ranging from 500 to 1500 meters in elevation. The reserve was created to protect the black-cheeked gibbon, a rare species of monkey that was rediscovered in 1997 after being presumed extinct.The Bokeo Nature Reserve is known for its biodiversity and ecotourism opportunities. The landscape features lush rainforests, pristine rivers, and diverse wildlife. Besides the black-cheeked gibbon, the reserve is home to various animals, including Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, bears, tigers, clouded leopards, and hornbills. Visitors can also spot a variety of plant species and other wildlife within the reserve.The most popular way to access and experience the Bokeo Nature Reserve is through the Gibbon Experience, an ecotourism project launched in 2007. This project offers guided tours, trekking options, and overnight stays in treehouses built high in the forest canopy. These treehouses provide a unique vantage point for observing gibbons in their natural habitat and experiencing the beauty of the rainforest. Ziplining is another thrilling activity available, allowing visitors to move between treehouses and across the reserve while enjoying the scenery from above.Visiting the Bokeo Nature Reserve not only provides an adventurous and immersive experience but also supports conservation efforts and local communities. The Gibbon Experience project aims to conserve forest lands, prevent poaching, and promote sustainable agriculture, creating jobs and supporting indigenous people.
