As the story goes, when Vientiane was being built, a young pregnant woman named Si Muang volunteered to sacrifice herself to appease angry spirits during the construction of the city pillar. She jumped into the hole where the pillar was to be erected and was crushed when the pillar was lowered. This act of selflessness led to the temple being named in her honor, and she is now revered as a guardian spirit of Vientiane. The central pillar is believed to protect the city and its inhabitants.Today, Wat Si Muang attracts a constant stream of devotees seeking blessings and good fortune. Visitors can participate in the Baci ceremony, where monks tie white threads around their wrists, symbolizing purity, peace, and good luck. The temple complex includes a main hall with two rooms, an area dedicated to the worship of Mother Si Muang, and numerous Buddha statues. Wat Si Muang is located in the city center, making it easily accessible on foot from many points in Vientiane. From the Patuxai Victory Monument, walk east along Thanon Lane Xang, then turn right onto Thanon Setthathirath. Continue for approximately 1.5 km; the temple will be on your left. The walk takes about 20-25 minutes. No costs involved.
