Wat Khili: A Gem of Laotian Temple Art

Wat Khili, or Wat Souvanna Khili (Temple of the Golden Mountain), is a charming Buddhist temple located in Luang Prabang, Laos. Nestled in the UNESCO World Heritage city, Wat Khili offers a glimpse into the spiritual and artistic heritage of Laos. Built in 1773 by Chao Kham Satta, a prince from Xieng Khouang province, the temple's architecture reflects the traditional Laotian style with a blend of influences from the Xieng Khouang region. The temple is known for its red exterior, gold columns, and sweeping roof finials adorned with nagas (serpent-like deities). The sim (ordination hall) features colorful Tree of Life mosaics, intricate Buddhist motifs, and detailed carvings, showcasing local beliefs and artistry. One notable feature is the annex on the west side of the sim, housing the main Buddha image in a deep niche. The temple also has a two-story structure, the Sala Thammaviharn, which was converted into an exhibition honoring the former abbot Satthu Khamfan Silasangvaro.
