Founded in 2000 by Joanna Smith and Veomanee Douangdala, the center aims to elevate the profile of Lao textiles internationally while providing economic opportunities for local artisans.Located on the banks of the Mekong River, just outside Luang Prabang, the Living Craft Centre offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the world of Lao textiles. You can take a free guided tour to learn about the journey from silkworm to finished product, witnessing every step of the textile production process. Skilled artisans demonstrate traditional weaving methods, natural dyeing techniques, and intricate pattern creation.For a more hands-on experience, participate in a workshop and learn the art of weaving, dyeing, or batik. The center also features a shop where you can purchase handmade textiles and souvenirs, supporting the artisans directly. The Silk Road Cafe offers a delightful culinary experience with a menu blending Lao and Western flavors, with views of the Mekong River.Ock Pop Tok's commitment extends beyond its center through the Village Weavers Project, which supports over 500 artisans from ethnic communities throughout Laos. This initiative provides skills training, product development, and market access, empowering women and preserving traditional crafts. Ock Pop Tok also founded Fabric2Fibre, a charity dedicated to collecting, preserving, and documenting heritage Lao textiles.
