Patuxay, meaning "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph", is a prominent landmark in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Often called the Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane, it was built between 1957 and 1968 to honor those who fought for independence from France. While the Patuxay's architecture bears a resemblance to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it incorporates traditional Laotian design elements. The monument has five towers, representing the five principles of coexistence and the five Buddhist principles. The gateways on each side align with the cardinal directions, and the monument is adorned with carvings of gods, goddesses, and mythological creatures. The monument is made of concrete and decorated with Lao motifs and sculptures depicting mythical creatures from Lao Buddhist mythology. Visitors can ascend the monument via a spiral staircase to reach the observation deck, which provides panoramic views of Vientiane. The seven floors contain administrative offices, a gift shop, and a museum.
