Wat Xieng Thong, located at the tip of the Luang Prabang peninsula, is a dazzling display of Lao religious architecture and artistry. Constructed between 1559 and 1560 by King Setthathirath, its name translates to 'Temple of the Golden City'. The temple held royal patronage until 1975 and was used for coronations and important festivals.The *sim*, or main shrine hall, features a sweeping, multi-tiered roof adorned with golden *dok so fa*. Inside, you'll find walls decorated with intricate gold stencils depicting mythological and Jataka tales. The ceiling displays Dharmachakras, symbolizing Buddhist law.Behind the *sim*, the Sanctuary of the Reclining Buddha houses a revered two-meter-long statue crafted in 1569. The rear gable of the *sim* features a stunning glass mosaic of the Tree of Life. The royal funerary carriage house displays a 12-meter-high carriage and royal urns. The temple grounds also include a library, drum tower, and monks' living quarters.Wat Xieng Thong not only provides a glimpse into Laos' rich cultural heritage but also continues to be a living temple where monks reside and worship.
