Sala Keo Kou: A Mystical Sculpture Park

Sala Keo Kou is a unique sculpture park located in Nong Khai, Thailand, near the Mekong River and the border with Laos. The park, also known as Wat Khaek, features a collection of giant concrete sculptures inspired by Buddhist and Hindu mythology. These fantastical creations are the vision of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, a shaman priest and artist who began constructing the park in 1978 after fleeing Laos.Sulilat's inspiration stemmed from his encounter with a hermit named Keoku, who instilled in him a love for mystical arts. The sculptures, some reaching 25 meters in height, depict deities, mythical creatures, and scenes from Buddhist and Hindu epics. The park also contains a three-story pavilion, resembling a mosque, which houses artifacts and Sulilat's mummified body.Among the most notable sculptures are the Buddha meditating under a seven-headed Naga snake and the Wheel of Life, a circular arrangement of sculptures representing the karmic cycle of birth and death. The sculptures are made of concrete, and while some weathering is apparent, it adds to their unique charm. The park serves as both a tourist attraction and a place of worship for many Thai visitors. Sala Keo Kou offers a serene escape and a glimpse into the syncretic religious beliefs of the region.
