Discover more about Tham Chang

Tham Chang Cave, also known as Jang Cave, is a prominent natural and historical site located a short distance from Vang Vieng town center. In the early 19th century, the cave served as a crucial defensive position against Yunnanese Chinese invaders. Its elevated location provided a clear view of the surrounding landscape, allowing defenders to monitor approaching threats. Today, Tham Chang welcomes tourists to explore its geological wonders. The cave features numerous stalactites and stalagmites, formed over centuries. The interior is well-lit, and pathways with stairs and rails guide visitors through the various chambers. The main chamber is quite large, and the cave extends deep into the mountain. In addition to the cave itself, the surrounding area offers other attractions. At the base of the staircase leading to the cave is a 'Blue Lagoon', a pool of greenish-blue water where visitors can swim. The water's color comes from minerals that collect as it passes through the mountain. The site also provides viewpoints with scenic views of the Nam Song River and the Vang Vieng landscape.
