Getting There

Car

From the center of Thakhek, head south on Route 12 (Thakhek - Savannakhet Road) for approximately 15 kilometers. Look for signs for Tham Nong Pa Fa and turn right onto the road marked for the cave. Drive for about 3 kilometers to reach the parking area. Parking fee may be around 3,000 LAK.
Public Transportation

From Thakhek bus station, take a local bus or songthaew heading towards Nakhon Phanom. Inform the driver of your destination, Tham Nong Pa Fa. The fare should be around 20,000 LAK. After about 30 minutes, ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point to the cave entrance. From there, you may need to walk or take a short tuk-tuk ride to the cave.

Tham Nong Pa Fa, or the Buddha Cave, is a must-see destination located near Thakhek in Laos. This cave gained prominence in April 2004 when a local villager, Boun Nong, searching for bats, stumbled upon a hidden chamber filled with 229 bronze Buddha statues. These statues, ranging from 15 cm to over 1 meter in height, are believed to be over 300 years old and originate from the Sikhottabong and Lane Xang eras.The discovery of the Buddha Cave quickly transformed it into a major tourist attraction and a sacred site for locals. The villagers have organized guards to protect the Buddha statues 24/7. Inside the cave, visitors can admire the intricate rock formations illuminated by natural light filtering through openings. The serene atmosphere invites contemplation and appreciation of the natural and spiritual elements.Besides the Buddha statues, the cave also contains palm leaf manuscripts written in ancient Lao script, including religious texts in Lane Xang, Lanna, Pali, and ancient Khmer scripts. The cave is named after the lake at the foot of the cliff, Nong Pa Fa, meaning “Lake of Soft-Shelled Turtle”. A visit to Tham Nong Pa Fa offers a unique glimpse into the geological wonders and cultural heritage of Laos.
