Discover more about Vat Phou

Vat Phou, also known as Wat Phu (meaning 'mountain temple'), is a ruined Khmer Hindu temple complex in southern Laos, recognized as one of Southeast Asia's oldest worship sites. Located 6 kilometers from the Mekong River in Champasak province, it lies at the base of Mount Phou Khao. This temple complex was a significant part of the Khmer Empire, with its center in Angkor to the southwest, dating back to at least the 10th century. The temple, originally dedicated to Shiva, was constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries, with some structures dating back to the 5th century. Later, it transitioned into a Theravada Buddhist site, which it remains today. This blend of Hindu and Buddhist influences is reflected in the temple's imagery. Vat Phou's structures are designed to relate to water, with many elements connected to a mythical creation story. The temple complex is situated near a spring and was built over it. The mountain itself was considered the home of Shiva, with the river representing the ocean. The temple complex is spread across seven terraces on three levels, representing one of the largest archaeological sites in Laos. The site includes two great barays bordered by stone lotus sprouts and smaller reservoirs. The processional pathway leads from the barays to the main sanctuary. Today, visitors can explore the temple's historical ruins, intricate carvings, and spiritual ambiance. The site provides a tranquil experience compared to more crowded locations like Angkor Wat.
